The Word of Life

Just as we need daily bread (or food) to sustain us physically, we also need daily spiritual food to sustain us spiritually. Spiritual food comes in the form of seeking God through His word in the Bible. If we do not partake of daily food, eventually we will starve. Similarly, if we do not feed on God’s word, we will eventually starve spiritually.

In his second letter to Timothy, the apostle Paul wrote: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:15, NKJV). We are privileged indeed to have God’s inspired word easily accessible to us, to teach us His ways and instruct us in righteous living, so that we may be equipped to live according to God’s ways.

God’s word can speak into every need we have in life. We may need encouragement when our faith wavers, comfort when we suffer the loss of a loved one, or when we experience financial reverses. Sometimes we need assurance that God loves us and cares for us individually. If we are afraid or in need of guidance, the words of Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) speak to our need: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own under-standing; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths”.

No matter what circumstance in life we may face, God can speak to us – if we seek Him. Sometimes as we read the Bible, God awakens us to attitudes or actions in our lives which are wrong and in need of correction, but He does this as a loving Father who wants the very best for His children. The life of Jesus provides the perfect model of how we should aspire to live. By reading the Bible and feeding on God’s word, we learn from the life of Jesus how our attitudes and actions ought to be.

As we regularly seek God and establish relationship with Him, the Holy Spirit guides us and helps us to live lives which are pleasing to Him. The apostle Peter wrote in his second epistle: “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” (2 Peter 1:3, NIV).

Jesus instructed the people in John 6:27,35 (NKJV): “27‘Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.’ 35And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst’.”

Our Lord indeed does “exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us” (Ephesians 3:20, NKJV).

 All glory be to God!
