Different types of hope!

Most sports fans hope their favourite team will win the championship. Coming to Queensland from Victoria, I quietly realised the advantages of adopting the “Maroons” as my team to back in the State of Origin rather than the “Blues”!

If we were really honest, though, we too realise that only one team can win, and there have been times when I have reluctantly realised that New South Wales was the better side on the day and deserved to win.

The word “hope” can be either a noun or a verb. When we hope (verb) for our team to win, we want something to happen.

However, when we have hope (as a noun), we have the assured expectation that something will happen.

For Christians, the hope which Christ gives us through His resurrection is not a wanting or wishful hope, but an assured expectation of what we know is to come.

Peter explains that believers in Christ are given “new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade” (1 Peter 1:3-4, NIV).

When we place hope in things and people, we are often disappointed. How does your “noun hope” in Christ compare with your “verb hope” for things in this world?

May you know God’s strength and hope as we journey together.
